Interactive 2048 Tutorial: Learn Every Move

Learn 2048 by moving real tiles on a controlled practice board. Five short lessons explain equal-tile merges, why a new tile can merge only once per move, how a corner anchor works, how merges create breathing room, and how two 1024 tiles become 2048. The tutorial does not affect your score, account, or rankings.

Lesson 1 of 5

Merge Equal Tiles

The board is ready. Make the requested move.

You completed the practice board

You now know the rules that decide every legal 2048 move. A full game adds a random 2 or 4 after each successful move, so protect empty cells and keep your largest tile anchored.

What the Five Lessons Teach

The rule behind each practice board

1. Equal values merge

Two matching tiles combine into one tile worth their total. Two 2 tiles make 4.

2. One merge per move

A newly created tile waits until the next move before it can merge again.

3. Corners preserve order

Keeping the largest tile fixed gives smaller values a predictable path toward it.

4. Empty cells buy choices

A merge frees a cell. More open cells mean more legal moves and more recovery options.

5. The target is 2048

Two 1024 tiles merge into 2048. A full game lets you continue beyond that milestone.

What Changes in a Full Game?

This practice board uses fixed positions and does not spawn random tiles, so each lesson can explain one rule clearly. In a normal game, every successful move adds a 2 about 90% of the time or a 4 about 10% of the time in a random empty cell. That uncertainty is why the corner strategy and open-space habit matter.
