2048 Strategy Basics

A few proven habits separate players who stall at 512 from players who reach 2048 and beyond:

• Anchor your biggest tile in a corner. Pick one corner and keep your highest tile parked there for the entire game. The corner strategy is the foundation every other technique builds on.
• Keep your rows ordered. Arrange each row so values always increase toward your anchor corner. These monotonic rows merge cleanly instead of leaving small tiles stranded between big ones.
• Build a snake. Chain descending values back and forth across the board so one merge cascades into the next. The snake pattern turns a winning position into a runaway score.
• Don't chase random merges. Reacting to whatever tile just spawned scrambles your structure. Plan two or three moves ahead and avoid pressing your worst direction.

2048 was created by Gabriele Cirulli, a 19-year-old Italian developer who built the game over a single weekend and released it for free in March 2014.
