Unity Game: Competitive 2048

Unity Game is the 2048 platform behind 2048.now - the classic sliding-tile puzzle with a full competitive layer on top. No download, no install, no console. Start on the 4×4 board, or read how to play 2048 first.

The Classic Puzzle, Played Competitively
2048 was built as a single-player time-killer with no way to prove a score. Unity Game rebuilds it as a competition: three grid sizes with separate ladders, monthly ranked seasons, a 13-tier rank system, Arena matches, and a daily board the whole world plays at once. Free to play, free to compete.

How 2048 Works

1
Swipe the whole board. Arrow keys, WASD, or a swipe on mobile. Every tile slides as far as it can in that direction - you never move a single tile on its own.
2
Equal tiles merge. When two tiles of the same value collide they become one tile of double the value, and you score points equal to that new tile. Two 4s make an 8 and score 8.
3
A new tile spawns every move. A 2 or a 4 appears in a random empty cell after each move that actually changed the board. Empty cells are the resource you are really managing.
4
The game ends when nothing can move. Reaching the 2048 tile is the classic win, but the board keeps going - 4096, 8192 and beyond are where competitive scores are made.
The full ruleset - merge order, what ends a game, and how the undo limit works - is on the 2048 rules page.

Three Grids, Three Separate Ladders

A 6×6 score is not comparable to a 4×4 score, so they are never pooled into one list. Each grid size has its own ranked leaderboard, and you can hold a different rank on each.

Standings for each: Classic 4×4 leaderboard, Large 5×5 leaderboard, and Expert 6×6 leaderboard.

Ways to Play

Ranks, Trophies and Progression

  • Your rank is your total trophy count across 10 categories, running through 13 military tiers from Private to General. See the full ladder on the 2048 ranks page.
  • Trophies only ever go up. A bad game can cost you a leaderboard position, but it can never cost you a rank - so there is no reason not to attempt a risky build. The trophy categories are listed in full.
  • Equipment is 100% cosmetic. Board skins, tile styles and profile badges change nothing about how a board plays - there is no paid advantage in any mode. See equipment.
  • Every move is recorded server-side and results are validated before they touch a leaderboard, which is what makes the rankings worth competing on at all.

Strategy That Actually Moves Your Score

The four that matter most
  • Anchor your biggest tile in one corner and never move it. Pick a corner at the start of the run and commit - almost every high score is built this way. Detail: 2048 corner strategy.
  • Only ever use three directions. If your anchor is bottom-left, stop pressing up. One careless press is what shifts the anchor and ends most promising runs.
  • Build a descending snake along the edge. Keep the row next to your anchor ordered high-to-low so merges cascade instead of stranding a big tile in the middle.
  • Empty cells are the real currency. Merge early and often when the board fills; a board with two free cells is already effectively lost. More in tips and tricks.

Common Questions

Is it free?
Yes. Every grid size, all game modes, the leaderboards, seasons and ranks are free and need no payment. Premium and the shop only affect cosmetics and convenience, never how a board plays.
Do I need an account?
You can play immediately as a guest. An account is what saves your scores, ranks you on the leaderboards and carries your progress between devices.
Does it work on a phone?
Yes - it runs in the browser on phone, tablet and desktop with swipe controls on touch screens. There is nothing to install and no app store involved.
What counts as a good score?
On 4×4, reaching the 2048 tile at all puts you ahead of most players; a strong competitive run is 20,000+ and the top of the ladder is well past that. The scoring guide breaks down how points accumulate.
